Tuition is $600 per student. A minimum of 8 students is required to run the workshop; class size is capped at 12 to preserve individual instruction time.
Tartan is provided by the student. A supply list with yardage requirements is sent well ahead of the workshop so students can select and order their own fabric. Students who need help sourcing tartan can reach out to Kristi Karren ahead of time, send the cost of the fabric, and she will purchase it on their behalf — no markup, just the cost of the tartan.
Thread, tailor's chalk, beeswax, interfacing, buckles, straps, and lining are supplied by the instructor and included in tuition. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own copy of The Art of Kiltmaking by Elsie Stuehmeyer as a reference during and after the workshop; it is not provided and should be purchased separately.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Kristi Karren has been hand-sewing custom kilts for nearly twenty years, with hundreds of commissioned kilts delivered to customers worldwide. Trained personally by Elsie Stuehmeyer — co-author of The Art of Kiltmaking, the definitive reference on traditional hand-sewn construction — she teaches the same rigorous, authentic techniques: hand-pleated
setts, traditional fell construction, and a fully hand-finished waistband. Students are taught to a standard suitable for competition and heirloom wear, not a shortcut version.
Curriculum
The pacing of the class:
Pre Class: I send out information on how to order tartan, how to take measurements and where to buy the book. Students respond with their tartan selection so I can buy thread.
Day 1. Introductions, taking measurements, learning to calculate the apron and pleats at the hip and waist, cutting the tartan, starting the sewing process.
Day 2. Pleating, pleating and more pleating.
Day 3. Finishing the pleats, finishing the apron edges, creating order from the chaotic backside, starting the structural stitches
Day 4. Finishing the structural stitches and adding interfacing; finishing the kilt edges, adding the waistband, pressing the kilt
Day 5. Sporran loops, buckles and straps, lining.
Although students are working at their own projects, some with smaller kilts, some with larger kilts, there will be plenty of time to work one on one as well as call the group together to demonstrate a skill. Often there will be someone who is ahead of the group to allow for demonstration of next steps. And I'll be working with, and encouraging all students, especially those who are struggling.
